Toward a generative transformational approach to visual perception

چکیده
Shepard’s notion of “internalisation” is better interpreted as a simile than a metaphor. A fractal encoding model of visual perception is sketched, in which image elements are transformed in such a way as to maximise symmetry with the current input. This view, in which the transforming system embodies what has been internalised, resolves some problems raised by the metaphoric interpretation.

Section 2: A Generative Transformational Approach to Modelling Visual Perception
This section is chiefly concerned with developing a generative transformation model of visual perception, although it addresses related matters and other concerns in later chapters. Most of the patterns described in Chapter 1 are employed by the model in pattern discrimination, and some new patterns are also employed. Most of the work is original, and work anywhere in the section that is not or...
متن کاملOn the Emergence of Scientific Grammar in Iran
Writing the grammar of a language is one of the most significant outputs of linguistic studies. In Iran, it is Avicenna (Ibn-e Sina) who is credited with the first such compilation of the Persian language. Understanding the weaknesses associated with the traditional trends of grammar writing in Iran, contemporary Iranian linguists adopted the modern Western approach following the Chomskyan Turn...
متن کاملAn assessment of the validity of Bernstein’s linguistics in the ‘Unanswered Question’ (1973) and the boundaries of his ‘quasi-scientific’ approach
In his Norton Lectures (1973), Bernstein presents a self-styled ‘quasi-scientific’ exposition on an intuitively felt and – purportedly – rationally established ‘musicolinguistics’. By asserting the significance of the harmonic scale as a foundation for an innate musical competence, Bernstein creates a theory of musical grammar ostensibly akin to the transformational generative grammar expounded...
متن کاملComputational Linguistics and Generative Linguistics: The Triumph of Hope over Experience
It is remarkable if any relationship at all persists between computational linguists (CL) and that part of general linguistics comprising the mainstream of MIT transformational-generative (TG) theoretical syntax. If the lines are still open, it represents something of a tribute to CL practitioners’ tolerance — a triumph of hope and goodwill over the experience of abuse — because the TG communit...
متن کاملTen Choices for Lexical Semantics
The modern computational lexical semantics reached a point in its development when it has become necessary to define the premises and goals of each of its several trends. This paper proposes ten choices in terms of which these premises and goals can be discussed. It is argued that the central questions include the use of lexical rules for generating word senses; the role of syntax, pragmatics, ...
